Chun Castle
Chun Castle is situated in a dramatic location in the Parish of Morvah in the far West of Penwith. Its location provides amazing views of the rugged North Cornish Coast and its Mining Heritage. It is also possible while visiting the site, to see some of the other historical sites within its vicinity such as Chun Quoit and the Men-an-Tol Stone.
The castle itself is the remains of a Bronze Age settlement.
Work was started by PAROW at Chun in October 2006 to start a new management regime to control the growth of vegetation at the site. In recent years, the lack of effective management has allowed the site to become very overgrown, with a dense and rapidly spreading layer of Bracken and Brambles obscuring many of the archeological features of the site. Much of the center of the site has now been cleared and it is hoped that with regular clearance of re-growth as it emerges in the spring, it will be possible to encourage the regeneration of a much wider spread of species such as Campions and Blue Bells.

Chun Castle before current clearance work |
It is hoped that it will be possible to continue on with the huge task of clearing the vegetation at Chun in the coming year, with the remainder of the center cleared and also work started to uncover the earth works outside of the center, which will help to more clearly define the castles shape. Visiting Chun Castle It is possible to visit Chun Castle by parking in a small Car Park alongside Woon Gumpas Common on the B3318 road as it crosses to Pendeen. You can then walk across a series of paths to pass in front of the Quoit and continue climbing to the Castle remains itself. |
